Automation of high-throughput tracking of COVID-19

In March of 2020, the World Health Organisation has declared the Novel Coronavirus Disease, SARS-CoV-2, officially as a pandemic.

All over the world, health institutions started testing citizens to determine if they were carriers of the virus and to assure the control of the spreading levels of the disease. The process is simple: a citizen becomes aware that he or she has been in contact with the disease, gets tested, and knows the results as soon as possible.

However, sometimes, this can be a slow process. There are some gaps between the pipeline of gathering swab samples and providing test results to the people involved. In many places, this process is entirely or partially manual. While some laboratories have the results being handled through e-mail, others perform direct calls to the person who was tested. These processes can translate in higher costs for the laboratories, an inefficient allocation of human resources, and several other constraints.

In this scope, BMD Software is currently developing SIARC, a platform that intends to facilitate the workflow of Covid-19 testing management, in partnership with the University of Aveiro.

The goal of this project is to provide laboratories with a higher capacity to test citizens and fasten the presentation of results to everyone involved, through the creation of a decision support system.

The development of the platform was started in November 2020. SIARC is being funded by Centro2020, 15/SI/2020, I&D Empresas, COVID-19.
