Five Years of EPND: BMD Software’s role in building a research platform

The European Platform for Neurodegenerative Diseases (EPND) has served as a landmark public-private partnership over the past five years. By bringing together existing European research initiatives, EPND is removing longstanding barriers to data and biosample sharing by building a collaborative ecosystem. This allows the discovery of diagnostics and treatments for conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

As a core technology partner, BMD Software spent the last five years developing, testing, and scaling functionalities for the EPND Hub. Our team contributed to the development of a secure, interoperable platform that enables researchers to discover and request access to high-quality clinical datasets and medical imaging. Today, the EPND Hub operates as a self-sustaining network. It connects more than 80 cohorts and is helping to transform how researchers conduct neurodegenerative disease research. As a result, it’s new standards for data compliance and security.

Turning vision into reality: Live datasets on the EPND Hub

As the consortium gathers in Split, Croatia for the final EPND Annual Meeting (Fig. 1), we are celebrating a major milestone: the platform is live and actively serving the global scientific community.

The EPND Hub now hosts requestable multi-modal datasets, including:

  • ATN and Complement Datasets: These datasets combine samples, clinical data, and imaging from 350 participants with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) across 10 European cohorts.
  • Multi-Omics and Digital Biomarkers: The Hub now includes newly integrated microbiome, proteomics, metabolomics, and digital biomarker resources.

Researchers can explore these datasets directly on the EPND Discover Portal.

Although the official IHI-funded project phase is drawing to a close, the EPND Hub will continue to support the global research community as a vital, long-term resource for neurodegenerative disease research.
