Breast 4.0: Advancing digital surgery for Breast Cancer treatment

A new step towards the future of breast cancer surgery is underway with Breast 4.0. This Portuguese project is led by the Champalimaud Foundation’s Digital Surgery Lab. Breast 4.0 combines cutting-edge computer vision with clinical imaging data. As a result, it brings fully digital, non-invasive, Augmented Reality–guided surgical navigation into the operating room.

This innovation is design to guide surgeons in preparing for breast-cancer surgeries. By blending real-time imaging, advanced computational models, and augmented reality visualization, surgeons can plan and execute procedures with better accuracy, potentially improving clinical outcomes for patients.

To make this possible, a multidisciplinary consortium was created. It includes the Champalimaud Foundation, BMD SoftwareINESC TEC, and IT People Innovation. Moreover, the project is funded by the Portuguese Plano de Resiliência e Recuperação, reinforcing the national commitment in enhancing breast cancer treatment through digital innovation.

As a key consortium member, BMD Software contributes essential expertise in intelligent imaging and robust PACS solutions. Therefore, ensuring seamless integration of clinical imaging data directly into the surgical workflow. Our PACS solution already incorporates the AVA algorithm for intelligent surgery planning. In addition, now supports advanced, rapid breast tissue segmentation. This capability enables immediate and accurate visualization of the tumor, offering surgeons clearer information at the most critical moment.

We look forward to continuing this pioneering work to set a new standard for surgical precision.
