BMD new accomplishment: established national PACS infrastructure in Bulgaria
This year, BMD Software achieved a landmark accomplishment in Bulgaria’s digital healthcare modernization: the company deployed a nationwide PACS in Bulgaria. BMD Software was selected to lead the implementation of this PACS infrastructure and will manage and support the system across the country.
In the first phase of deployment, BMD has implemented a multi-site PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) architecture that interconnects:
- 4 datacenters distributed across the country
- 10 hospitals participating in the initial rollout
The system will process about 3 million DICOM medical imaging studies per year in the first phase. It will enable healthcare professionals to access, review, and collaborate on imaging data efficiently and securely.
PACScenter: The platform powering the nationwide PACS in Bulgaria
At the core of the project is PACScenter, BMD’s next-generation, web-based PACS designed to support hospital networks, regional infrastructures, and nationwide medical imaging initiatives.
Key capabilities include:
- AI-assisted annotation and automation tools to accelerate reporting and enhance diagnostic quality.
- Web-based viewing and analysis enabling access from anywhere in any device.
- Advanced workflow orchestration to optimize radiology workloads across multiple care sites.
- Integration with the National Unified Health Records.
The team fully integrated the PACS infrastructure into the Bulgarian national unified health record system, ensuring seamless interoperability across the country’s healthcare ecosystem.

- Patients benefit from better care coordination and reduced duplicate exams.

What Comes Next?
After completing the first phase, the team plans to expand the system to additional hospitals and care providers. Additionally, the BMD team will also introduce new functionalities in PACScenter in the future.
