In the spotlight: SIC Notícias features Breast 4.0 project

What if a surgeon could see exactly where a tumor is located before making the first incision? This is the visionary goal of the Breast 4.0 project, an innovative initiative bringing together leading experts, including BMD Software. It was recently featured on national news for its potential to redefine breast cancer surgery.

Advancing breast cancer surgery with real-time Augmented Reality (AR) visualization

Notably, the Breast 4.0 project is becoming the new reality for breast cancer surgery. BMD Software is proud to be a member of the consortium for this innovative project. SIC Notícias, Portugal’s leading national news, recently featured this innovation, highlighting its potential to transform the future of oncological surgery.

This advanced imaging integration acts as a digital guide that provides surgeons with better precision during the surgery (Credit: SIC Notícias).

The solution integrates advanced medical imaging and artificial intelligence into specialized smart glasses (Figure 1) that allow surgeons to visualize tumors directly through the patient’s skin in real-time (Figure 2). This project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium that includes the Champalimaud Foundation, BMD SoftwareINESC TEC, and IT People Innovation. The project is funded by the Portuguese Plano de Resiliência e Recuperação, reinforcing the national commitment in enhancing breast cancer treatment through digital innovation.

BMD Software’s contribution to the Project

Our team contributes with our expertise in intelligent medical imaging infrastructure and AI-enabled clinical integration. Our solution supports the integration of the AVA algorithm for intelligent surgery planning and an AI-powered breast tissue segmentation providing surgeons with immediate and precise visualization. Moreover, we provide secure and scalable orchestration of imaging data and AI services within clinical workflows.

Looking ahead, the team expects to start the clinical trial in April. At BMD Software, we are honored to contribute our expertise in intelligent imaging for this solution.
